Design Jam
University of Michigan Information Interaction Lab
Focus: Design
Year: Fall 2018

Overview:
This was my first ever design jam. I had learned about it at our school orientation and decided to attend it. The professor who ran it, works with augmented reality and virtual reality (VR) technology. We worked in groups and presented to our peers.

Process:
A group of 3 students including myself worked on a problem to solve using virtual reality technology. We brainstormed different ideas and decided as a group that our problem statement is the ability to visit campus as a prospective student when they cannot attend on campus visitations.

We were taught how to make a paper prototype. My team decided that we would use a mascot as a tour guide on campus. I drew a variety of school settings that students would want to visit. We thought of the different prompts one would ask when one had a VR set on.

We presented our paper prototype showing the different scenarios the student would see based on their prompts. For example: The mascot would ask if you would like to see the library. If the student responded yes, the mascot would show the interior and suggest this is a good spot to study.

Paper Prototype
What I learned:
It was a three-hour time frame and that we were able think quickly to solve a problem. This helped me think in the future on how to construct a problem statement. It was my first time making a paper prototype and could see the advantages of quickly showing the different scenarios a user could be in. I had the opportunity to use the VR set after the design jam and realized how beneficial it would have been to know how the VR set operates before making design decisions.
